It’s All About Energy
The largest source of heat trapping greenhouse gas (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gas) emissions from human activities in the U.S. is from burning fossil fuels for energy. Energy drives our modern lifestyles. We use energy for lighting, heating and cooling, powering mechanical and electrical devices and transportation.
Carbon dioxide accounts for 79% of US greenhouse gas emissions. So when we talk about reducing our carbon footprint or being carbon neutral, we’re talking about reducing the amount of greenhouse gas that we release.
California’s greenhouse gas emissions breakdown by sector:
Marin County’s greenhouse gas emissions breakdown by sector:
More than half (54%) of Marin’s emissions are caused by burning fuels in combustion engine vehicles. The burning of natural gas in buildings is responsible for 26% of Marin’s emissions. Marin will eliminate 80% of its greenhouse gas emissions when we electrify transportation and buildings.
